Aziz, S.Pd, M.A Key word: Error Analysis, Grammatical Error, Writing, Business Letter. Business letter is one way of written communication which is important to maintain and establish relationship in commercial circles. As one of the major that its purpose is to prepare human resources who will be involved directly to business communication, the students of Office Management in LP3I must have a good competency on business letter. This study attempts to analyze students’ business letter by analyzing what are the grammatical errors occur and what types of errors are frequently found in their letters. Since the limitation of time doesn’t make it possible to analyze all types of business letters, then this study is only focussed on Inquiry Letter. A descriptive method is taken as the research methodology to give wider perspective about the result of study. It takes purposive sampling technique which involves 15 students of Office Management 29 in evening class. The instruments and data collection are taken from students’ writing test of inquiry letter. Then the data are marked to determine and classify errors categories and analyze them using Dulay’s Surface strategy Taxonomy. The findings describe that many students has varied grammatical errorrs in their letter. Most of them did the same errors at verb category (49%), particularly at verb tense and verb form. There are 88 errors occur among four categories which consist of 49% Verb errors, 13% Noun Ending errors, 16% Article errors, and 19% Sentence errors. Meanwhile, there were 36% Misformation errors, 31% Omission errors, 16% Addition, 5% Misordering. Misformation became the most frequent errors of all. Therefore, the writer sugests that the teachers give more attention on students’ grammar before start business correspondence class to improve students’ writing quality on business letter. | |
