Abstrak/Catatan ABSTRACT An Nisaa Rahmadani, 2016. The Use of Small Group Work Technique in Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension (An Experimental Study at SMPN 1 Baitussalam, Aceh Besar). Thesis, Graduate Program in English Language Education, Syiah Kuala University, Darussalam, Banda Aceh. Advisors : (1) Abdul Manan, M.Sc., M.A. Ph.D (2) Dr. Asnawi, S.Pd, M.Ed Key words : Small Group Work, Reading Comprehension, Narrative text. The objectives of this research are to find out (1) the significant differences between students who are taught by using small group work technique in reading comprehension in term of main idea, vocabulary, detail information and inference as compared to students who are not taught by using small group work technique. (2) whether the use of small group work technique motivate students in reading comprehension. An experimental research method was used to execute this study with the level of significance 95% or α = 0.05. The subjects of this study were 47 students of the eight grade of SMPN 1 Baitussalam Aceh Besar that were divided into an experimental class consisting of 16 students and a control class consisting of 16 students too. The experimental class was treated by using small group work technique and control class was treated by using traditional technique. The quantitative data are obtained from the result of pre-test and post-test score of the students’ reading comprehension. While, the qualitative data are obtained from the questionnaire distributed at the end of teaching to know the students’ responses toward the implementation of small group work technique in teaching reading comprehension. The data were computed by using a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Before the data were processed into further inferential statistics, the normality and the homogeneity of the data were examined. The results of the normality and homogeneity test showed that the data were normal (sig 0.146 and 0.010) and homogeneous (sig 0.252). The result of the reading study showed that there was no significant difference in term of main idea since Ftest(1.238) < Ftable (4.17), and inference Ftest(1.206)< Ftable (4.17) while, there were significant difference in term of vocabulary Ftest(26.114) > Ftable(4.17) and detail information Ftest(4.758) > Ftable (4.17). The result of the questionnaire also indicates that the students have not good response toward the implementation of small group work technique. From the questionnaire given, it is found the students perception asFtest(0.099) < Ftable (4.17). It means the applied technique had not successfully attracted and do not motivated students in learning reading comprehension. This result upheld that both null hypotheses were accepted. | |
