ABSTRACT Syukriyah, 2013. Using Jigsaw in Teaching Speaking. An Experimental Research at SMAN 4 Binjai, North Sumatera, Graduate English Education of Program in Language Education Syiah Kuala University. Advisor; (1) Dr. Sofyan A. Gani, M.A (2) Dr. Sri Minda Murni, M.S Key Words: Jigsaw, Speaking This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the using of Jigsaw in teaching speaking to the second grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Binjai. This study used experimental design. The instruments for collecting data were test and questionnaire. The population in this study is all the first grade students of SMAN 4 Binjai and two classes were taken as the samples, each class of the samples consists of 25 students. The finding of this study shows that Jigsaw technique used in teaching speaking affected the students’ speaking score. The experimental group students have higher speaking scores ( ) than control group ( ). Students’ speaking ability in both groups was different as indicated by t-test. The t-test shows the result of t-test is 15.9 while the result of t-table at the level of significance 5% (α = 0.05) is 1.68. it means that t-test is higher than t-table (10.3 > 1.68). It can be concluded that the students who were taught through Jigsaw technique achieve a better performance in speaking than those who were not taught through Jigsaw technique. In addition, the result of the questionnaires shows that the students became more active and productive by discussing ideas since the interactive classroom atmosphere and joyful learning helped them to be more confidence to express ideas orally.
