Daud, Ph.D. Key words: cooperative learning, student team achievement division (STAD). writing ability, descriptive text This study aims at finding out whether there is a significant improvement between the students who are taught writing by using STAD compared to those who are taught by using conventional method and to know which writing component is better taught by using STAD compared to that of conventional method. This research was conducted in the form of experimental research to the second grade students of SMPN 4 Banda Aceh. The sample of this research was class VII-2 (21 students) treated as an experimental group and VII-1 (23 students) as a control group by simple random sampling. The instrument used in collecting the data was test. In analyzing the data, the statistical formulas that were utilized such as by calculating the mean score, normality test, homogeneous test, standard deviation, and t-test. The results of the research reveal that there is a significant improvement in the students’ writing by using STAD and those who are taught by using conventional method. This can be proved by the results of the tests, in which the t-test score of post-test in experimental is higher than t-table score (11.44>2.021). This means that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted that there is a significant improvement in the students’ writing ability. Furthermore, the results show that the writing component that had improved by using STAD is the content component. Most of the experimental students reached the level of excellent to very good (30-27) in their content especially in the post-test, after the experimental teachings had been conducted. In other words, the students have shown some knowleageable and adequate range of subject matter. Based on the findings, it reveals that implementing cooperative learning particularly STAD is effective to improve the students’ writing ability especially writing descriptive text. Thus, it is suggested that other researchers and teachers who have problems in their teaching try to implement this type of learning as it might help overcome the problems encountered particularly in getting the ideas of a given topic by sharing and helping each other to understand the concept. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada peningkatan yang signifikan antara kelompok eksperimen yang menggunakan teknik STAD dalam belajar writing dengan kelompok control yang menggunakan metode konvensional, dan untuk mengetahui komponen writing apa yang lebih meningkat dari model pembelajaran yang menggunakan STAD dibandingkan dengan yang menggunakan metode konvensional. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam bentuk penelitian eksperimental terhadap murid kelas dua SMPN 4 Banda Aceh. Sampel yang digunakan terdiri dari kelas VIII-2 sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan kelas VIII-1 sebagai kelompok kontrol dengan menggunakan simple random sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data adalah tes. Rumus statistik yang digunakan dalam menganalisa data adalah rumus rata-rata, test normalitas, tes homogenitas, standard deviasi dan t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa adanya peningkatan yang siknifikan terhadap kelompok eksperimen yang mendapatkan pengajaran writing menggunakan teknik STAD. Pernyataan ini dibuktikan dengan hasil tes yang diberikan, dimana nilai t-test dari post-test di kelompok eksperimental lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan nilai t-table (11.41 > 2.021). Ini menunjukkan bahwa peneliti menerima hipotesis alternatifnya, yaitu adanya peningkatan yang siknifikan diantara kedua kelompok. Dari hasil tes juga didapat informasi tentang komponen writing yang meningkat yaitu komponen isi. Kebanyakan dari siswa di kelompok eksperimen mencapai level sangat bagus (30-27) pada komponen isi terutama pada saat post-test, setelah pengajaran yang menggunakan teknik STAD dilakukan. Dengan kata lain, siswa telah mampu menunjukkan pemahaman atas topik yang diberikan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, ini menunjukkan bahwa penerapan STAD efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis, khususnya dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Oleh karena itu, maka disarankan agar para peneliti lain dan guru yang menghadapi permasalahan dalam mengajar mencoba menerapkan model pembelajaran ini karena mungkin dapat teratasi khususnya dalam mendapatkan ide tentang topik tertentu dengan cara berbagi dan membantu memberi pemahaman tentang konsep.
