This research focused on discovering the onomatopoeic words used by speakers in West Acehnese dialect. The objectives of this research are to find out kinds of types of onomatopoeia that exist in West Acehnese dialect and the meaning of each onomatopoeic word uttered by the speaker. The subject of this study were 10 people with the age range of 40-80 years old consisted of two males and eight females living in Meulaboh and Pereumbeu area. Meanwhile, the object of this research was the onomatopoeic words used by them in everyday interaction. Each person of the subject was interviewed for 40-50 minutes, then the answers were also recorded to assure no important data are missing. The data collection was done through some interviews. From the collecting data, the result of this study shows that there are seven types of onomatopoeia that exist in West Acehnese dialect that produced 107 data, namely, a) human sound (48 data), b) animal sound (14 data), c) nature sound (4 data), d) sound produced by object (15 data), e) sound of daily life (15 data), f) sound of social life and hobby (2 data), g) natural sound (9 data). Related to the meaning, the data were analyzed descriptively using componential analysis which combining the lexical and contextual meaning. The result shows most of the onomatopoeic words used have meaning contextually and some of them have lexical meaning.
