Abstract Name : Nour Ayouni Student No. : 1309200080064 Department/Program : English Education/Postgraduate Title : An Analysis on Teachers’ Elicitation in Speaking Class (A Descriptive Study at Ar-raniry State Islamic University) Key words: elicitation type, elicitation pattern, speaking class This study describes the implementation of teachers’ elicitation in speaking class of English Department of Ar-raniry State Islamic University (UIN Ar-raniry). It attempts to investigate types of elicitation used by the lecturers in speaking class, the most frequent type, and the pattern of elicitation exchange during the lesson. The participants of this study were five lecturers who were teaching speaking I and III. Hence, ten teaching sessions of speaking lesson were video-recorded and transcribed in order to analyze lecturers’ utterance to search some features such as elicitation and the pattern of its exchange. Qualitative method was implemented in this study and the data were obtained from observation and interview by means of video recorder, field-notes, obervation sheet and interview guide. Technique of data analysis was followed Miles’s & Huberman’s model including data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results of this study revealed that six types of elicitations including elicit:inform, elicit:confirm, elicit:agree, elicit:commit, elicit:repeat, and elicit:clarify were exploited by the lecturers in teaching speaking. Further, the pattern of the elicitation exchange in speaking class covers 16 patterns in whichIRF (Initiation, Response, and Follow-up) original structure was the most commonly organized around the sequence. It also consisted of Ib expansion in the IRF model where the lecturers used nomination, rephrasing, clues when they get no responses or incorrect answer. Further, elicit:inform was the most frequent type of elicitation used by the lecturers in speaking class. It took the highest frequency of use with the total number 359 out of 479 which reached 72.23%. This indicates that the lecturers frequently used elicitation to invite students to speak English.
