Abstrak/Catatan Acehnese is an Austronesian language spoken by three and a half million people (Ethnologue, 2015) in the province of Aceh in Sumatra, Indonesia. This study presents an ethnographic investigation of Acehnese kinship. The ethnographic research is done by a native Acehnese, attempting to describe the kinship system from the native’s point of view. Data collection is done by observation and interview with twelve informants based in Banda Aceh. Terminology for Ego’s generation and two ascending generations is recorded and described using componential analysis, while the descent system and marriage rules are described by analytic induction. The terminological system is confirmed to be of the Hawaiian type, with the address term lexicon making distinction in generation, sex, birth order, and relative age. Uxorilocality is practiced with double descent system that is leaning towards patrilineality. Proscriptive marriage rules forbid marriages between immediate relatives and milk relatives. Overall, the features are found to be rather in disagreement with each other. The Acehnese kinship system is not the one to conform to basic anthropological and linguistic theory, which makes it unique and noteworthy. | |
