Abstrak/Catatan

This survey was aimed at finding out students’ perception towards lecturers’ oral corrective feedback in speaking classes at the Department of English Language Education of Ar-Raniry State Islamic University (UIN Ar-Raniry) Banda Aceh. The subjects of this survey were the fourth-semester students. Questionnaire and interview were used to collect the data. This survey used the combination of quantitative and qualitative study. Therefore, the participants of this study were selected using mixed methods sampling technique. Firstly, five groups that contained 100 students were randomly selected based on the estimated survey sample to gather the data needed for the questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed through a quantitative procedure by using a statistical formula to find out the percentage of each statement. After the questionnaire was analyzed, five students listed on the first five row (high achievers) and five students listed on the last five row (low achievers) based on the average score of speaking, were purposively chosen to be interviewed. The collected data were analysed and interpreted through qualitative procedures; data condensation, data display and data verification. The results of the questionnaire showed that the students perceived lecturers’ oral corrective feedback as an important part of language learning. Lecturers’ oral corrective feedback was very helpful in improving the students’ speaking ability. Through the interview, it was found that there was no difference between high and low achieving students’ perception towards lecturers’ oral corrective feedback. Both groups of students believed that lecturers’ oral corrective feedback is necessary and helpful in speaking classes. However, the students noted that oral corrective feedback during or in the middle of their speaking performance is better to be avoided because it can distract their concentration. In addition, the students said that it is better to avoid harm or destructive words that can destroy their self-confidence in giving oral corrective feedback.
