Abstract Name : Amalia Silmina Student No. : 1006102020057 Study Program : English Education Title : The Constraint of Listening Skill faced by the College Students Key words : Constraints in Listening, Students’ Efforts This research intended to describe the constraints of listening skill faced by the college students and their effort to cope the constraints. The research was performed on 24 students of English study program of Syiah Kuala University who already took and passed literal listening, interpretive listening and advance listening class who are on the third year.To gain the data, the writer conducted a descriptive qualitative research at English study program of Syiah Kuala University. The writer used Questionnaire and interview as the instruments of this study. The results of the questionnaire and interview were analyzed by using analytic method proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994).The result of this study shows that the constraints that mostly faced by the students is related to spoken text, physical setting, listeners and the insignificant constraint is related to their personals’ comment. The result also found that four efforts are made by the students to overcome the constraints namely; (1) practice formal listening task, (2) listening to English news, (3) listening to English song, and (4) watching English movies. This study suggested that English teachers should give their serious attention to the problems faced by students in listening skill and offer the appropriate solution to solve the problems.
