Abstract Name : Ayazal Izzi Student No. : 0906102050067 Study Program : English Education Title : The Use of Semantic Mapping as Media in Increasing The Students’ Vocabulary in Writing. Keywords : writing, semantic mapping The objective of this research is to find out how the teacher uses semantic mapping in teaching vocabulary in writing skill. Descriptive qualitative research is used as the research method. This research conducted in SMPN 1 Peukan Bada. The subject of this research was an English teacher and her students in class VI-5. The instruments used were observation sheets, interview and students’ worksheet. The result of the research was teacher taught writing a descriptive text using semantic mapping by following the steps as suggested by Masters, Mori, & Mori (1993, p. 118). Briefly, she asked to use semantic mapping in writing descriptive text by giving each group one different word topic. They easily found words that related to word topic and could make sentences from that words. And by using semantic mapping, the students could write better. .
