Abstract Name : Indra Syahputra Student No. : 1106102020048 Study Program : English Education Title : Students’ Efforts in Developing Speaking Skill (A Qualitative Study at English Education Study Program of Syiah Kuala University) Key words : Students’ efforts, speaking, motivation. This study was aimed at describing the efforts that students made in developing speaking skill conducted among the second semester students 2015 at English Education Study Program of Syiah Kuala University Banda Aceh. The study took a descriptive qualitative study as the research design. The framework of this study about students’ efforts is promoted by Pace and Kuh (1998). In obtaining the data, the writer used questionnaire and interview. The result of the questionnaire and interview reveal that the second semester students 2015 make some efforts in developing speaking skill such as reading English material, taking detailed notes in class, watching English movie, and performing English communication with friends. Students with high speaking score tend to make few efforts. It explains that the students with few efforts give their optimal focus on only few activities in order to develop their speaking skill.
