Kata Kunci: Teaching Writing, Clustering Technique Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengkaji pengaruh dari Clustering Technique dalam mengajar writing terhadap pelajar SMPN 1 Kualasimpang. Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian menulis pelajar antara pelajar yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan Clustering Tecnique dan pelajar yang tidak diajarkan dengan teknik itu. Untuk itu, ada dua kelas ditentukan sebagai sampel yang diambil secara random dari populasi target. Satu kelas merupakan kelas experimen dimana Clustering Technique diterapkan dan satu kelas lainnya merupakan kelas kontrol dimana Clustering Technique tidak diterapkan. Setiap kelas sampel terdiri dari 24 pelajar. Data dari sampel dikumpulkan melalui pre-test dan post-test dan hasilnya dikaji secara kwantitatif. Setelah menguji data yang diperoleh dari grup eksperimen dan grup kontrol, ditemukan bahwa nilai rata-rata post-test grup eksperimen adalah 76,3, lebih tinggi dari nilai rata-rata post-test grup kontrol yaitu 53,75. Selanjutnya, kedua nilai tersebut dianalisa dengan menggunalan t-test untuk dibandingkan dengan t-table. Hasilnya adalah nilai t-test 2,30 dan nilai t-table pada tingkat sgnifikan α 0,05 adalah 1,68. Ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai t-test lebih tinggi dari t-table (2,30 > 1,68). Ini berarti bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian writing pelajar antara grup eksperimen dan grup kontrol. Jadi, kesimpulannya adalah hipotesa alternatif (Ha) diterima dan hipotesa nul (Ho) ditolak. Berkenaan dengan kemajuan aspek writing pelajar; organization, content/ idea, structure dan mechanics grup eksperimen meningkatkan kemampuan menulisnya khususnya dalam aspek content/idea dari 56% pada pre-test ke 87% pada post-test. Ini berarti bahwa kemajuan pada aspek content/ idea meningkat hingga 36%. Sedangkan grup kontrol memperoleh skor 55% untuk aspek content pada pre-test dan 58% pada post-test. Dengan kata lain, tidak ada kemajuan yang besar pada aspek content bagi grup kontrol karena persentase dari pre-test ke post-test hanya meningkat 3%. Singkatnya, diantara keempat aspek yang disebutkan diatas, aspek content/idea dinyatakan sebagai aspek yang mengalami kemajuan paling besar yang dicapai oleh grup eksperimen. Key words: Teaching Writing, Clustering Technique. This study was designed to investigate the effects of Clustering Technique in teaching writing to the second year students of SMPN 1 Kualasimpang. The main purpose of the study was to find out if there would be significant difference in students’ writing achievement between students who were taught by using Clustering Technique and those who were not. Therefore, two classes were taken randomly as the samples from the target population. One class was as an experimental group where the Clustering Technique was applied and another class was as a control group where the Clustering Technique was not. Each class as the sample consists of 24 students. The data from the samples were collected through the pre-test and the post-test and the scores of the writing tests were analized quantitatively. After examining the data obtained from the experimental and the control groups, it is found that the mean score of the post–test of the experimental group, 76,3, is higher than the mean score of the post-test of the control group, 53,75. Further more, both of the scores were analized through t-test to be compared to t-table. The result of t-test score is 2,30 and the result of t-table score at a level of significant degree α = 0,05 is 1,68. It shows that t-test score is higher than t-table score (2, 30 > 1,68). It means that there is a significant difference in students’ writing achievement between the experimental and the control groups. Thus, the conclusions are alternative hypothesis is accepted and null hypothesis is rejected. In accordance with the progression of the students’writing aspects: organization, content/ idea, structure and mechanics, the experimental group increases their writing ability particularly in the aspect of content/idea from 56% in the pre-test to 87% in the post-test. It means that the progression of the content/ idea aspect improved until 36%. Meanwhile, the control group got 55% for the aspect of content in the pre-test and 58% in the post-test. In other words, there is no great progression of the students in control group since the percentage from the pre-test to the post-test grows only 3%. In short, among the four writing aspects, the content/idea aspect of the students’ writing was claimed as the greatest progression achieved by the experimental group.
