Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Education, Syiah Kuala University, Darussalam, Banda Aceh. Advisor (I) Dr. Sofyan A. Gani, M.A, & Advisor (II) Abdul Manan, M.Sc, M.A, Ph.D. Key words: CIRC Method, Cooperative Learning, Writing This research was intended to figure out the effectiveness of CIRC method in enhancing the quality of students’ writing to the second grade students of Junior High School (SMP) Nahdlatul Wathan, Jakarta in academic year 2013-2014. The major principle of conducting this research was to investigate whether or not the students in the experimental class taught by CIRC method would produce a better achievement than those of the control group applied Grammar Translation Method (GTM). The subjects of this study were the students in class 8A assigned as the experimental group and 8C as the control group. This procedure was taken through homogeneity of the participant. To find out the effectiveness of that method, the pre-test and the post-test were given for those groups. The result of data analysis demonstrated that there was a significant difference on students’ attainment from both groups proved by the average of the post-test’s score. As a result, the score of the post-test of the experimental group is higher than that of the control one that was 61,2 : 39 by which the gained score for t-test was 5 while the value for t-table was 1,68 at a level of significance 0,05. It can be concluded that the students who were taught by CIRC method had a better performance in writing a recount text than those who were not. In brief, CIRC enables to develop the quality of students’ writing and gives a positive effect on teaching and learning process.
