The Implementation of Guided Reading Strategy to Improve Students’ Ability in Reading Comprehension (A Classroom Action Research at Teacher Training Faculty of UIN Ar-Raniry). Thesis, Graduate Program in English Language Education, Syiah Kuala University, Darussalam Banda Aceh. Advisors: (1) Dr. Sofyan A. Gani, M.A. (2) Abdul Manan, M. Sc., M.A., Ph.D. Key Words: Guided Reading Strategy and Reading Comprehension This research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was aimed to describe the implementation process of Guided Reading Strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each of the cycles consisted of the activities of planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action and reflection. In collecting the data, there were three types of instruments used. They were; tests, observational sheets of the students and the researcher, and questionnaire for the students. The average mean score of the students’ initial test was 67.33. Then the students’ average mean score of the final test of cycle I was 70.76, which also had the equivalent with the level range of score “C”. Meanwhile the average score of the students in the second cycle was 81.03. It meant that there were some improvements of the students’ average mean score in the cycle II. If it was compared with the result of the students’ average score in the first cycle which was 70.76, the improving point was 10.27. The achievement of the students’ average mean score of the second cycle can be categorized in the score range level of “B” which had come into the level of qualification “good”. Then it could be concluded that it had met the criteria set in the successful indicator. In term of the students’ activity performance in cycle I was on the total average score of 2.43 and 3.01 in cycle II. It was in the criteria of “good” and it had met the success indicator set. While the researcher’s activity performance in cycle I was on the total average score of 2.39 and 3.10 in cycle II. It was also in the criteria of “good” and met the criteria set in success indicator of the researcher’s activity performance. In terms of the students’ response toward the implementation of Guided Reading Strategy was 90 % in the level of frequency in choosing the choice of “agree and strongly agree” which was considered as a positive response. And it had met the criteria set in the success indicator of the students’ response toward the implementation of Guided Reading Strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension ability. Hal ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan proses pelaksanaan Strategi Guided Reading dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus. Setiap siklus terdiri dari kegiatan perencanaan tindakan, pelaksanaan tindakan, mengamati tindakan dan refleksi. Dalam pengumpulan data , ada tiga jenis instrumen yang digunakan yaitu; tes , lembar observasi siswa dan peneliti, dan angket untuk siswa. Nilai rata-rata tes awal siswa adalah 67,33. Maka rata-rata skor siswa dari tes akhir pada siklus I adalah 70,76, yang setara dengan tingkat skor " C ". Sementara rata-rata skor siswa pada siklus kedua adalah 81,03. Ini berarti bahwa ada beberapa perbaikan dari rata-rata skor rata-rata siswa pada siklus II . Jika dibandingkan dengan hasil skor rata-rata siswa pada siklus I yaitu 70,76, jumlah peningkatannya dalah 10.27. Adapun Pencapaian skor rata-rata siswa dari siklus kedua dapat dikategorikan pada tingkat skor "B" yang telah naik pada tingkat kualifikasi "baik". Maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa nilai tersebut telah memenuhi kriteria yang ditetapkan dalam indikator keberhasilan . Dalam hal kinerja aktivitas siswa pada siklus I, total rata-rata skor adalah 2,43 dan 3,01 pada siklus II. Skor tersebut masuk dalam kriteria "baik" dan telah sesuai dengan indikator keberhasilan yang telah ditetapkan. Sementara kinerja kegiatan peneliti pada siklus I, total skor rata-ratanya adalah 2,39 dan 3,10 pada siklus II. Skor tersebut juga masuk dalam kriteria "baik" dan memenuhi kriteria yang ditetapkan dalam indikator keberhasilan kegiatan peneliti. Selanjutnya respon mahasiswa terhadap pelaksanaan Strategi Guided Reading adalah 90 % pada tingkat keseringan dalam memilih pilihan "setuju dan sangat setuju" yang dianggap sebagai respon positif. Dan itu telah memenuhi kriteria yang ditetapkan dalam indikator keberhasilan terhadap respon siswa dalam pelaksanaan implementasi Guided Reading Strategi dalam meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman membaca siswa .
