ABSTRACT Zainatuddar, 2014. Teaching Speaking by Using Picture Series Technique. An experimental study at the second year students of SMKN 1 Lhokseumawe. Thesis, Graduate English Education Program in Language Education Syiah Kuala University. Advisors: (1) Dr. Usman Kasim, M. Ed. (2) Dr. T. Zulfikar, M. Ed. Key words: speaking, picture series technique. The study is aimed at finding out if there is any significant difference in achievement between the students who were taught speaking by using picture series technique and those who were taught by using drill technique, knowing which speaking sub skills are better taught by using picture series technique, and finding out students’ responses toward the implementation of picture series technique in teaching speaking. This study applies an experimental research by using quantitative and qualitative method. It employs a true experimental design in which there were two classes; one was an experimental group which was taught by using picture series technique, and the other was a control group which was taught by using drill technique. The subjects of the study were the class XI Multimedia 1 and XI Multimedia 2 students of the second-year of SMKN 1 Lhokseumawe. There were 30 students in each class. The instruments utilized were questionnaire sheet and speaking test sheet. The collected data were analyzed by using statistical package for the social science (SPSS). Meanwhile, in calculating the students’ responses of the questionnaire, the researcher used percentage system. The findings indicate that picture series technique used in teaching speaking affected the students’ speaking score. The experimental group students have higher speaking score ( x = 80.10, S1 = 10.29 ) than the control group ( x = 67.67, S1 = 12.86 ). The students’ speaking ability in both groups was significantly different as indicated by t-test (the t-obtain (4.136) > t-table (2.00)). It shows that the students who were taught speaking by using picture series technique achieve better performance in speaking than those who were taught speaking by using drill technique. Besides, the finding of the research indicates that the five speaking sub-skills (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehensibility) are better taught by using picture series technique. It was based on the average score of each speaking sub-skill of speaking assessment. Furthermore, the result of the questionnaire shows that the students have good responses toward the using picture series technique in teaching Speaking. They became more active and creative in expressing their ideas. So, they became more confident in speaking.
