vious studies in speaking skill, the researcher applied the use of the information gap technique to solve the students’ problems on speaking skill. for some purposes, researcher formulated the research problems as follow: 1) how is the process of teaching and learning by using information gap activity in improving students’ speaking skill at semester ii of english department in almuslim university? 2) what is the result of information gap implentation towards the improvement of students’ speaking skill? and 3) how do the students respond to the implementation of information gap?. the objectives of this research are to describe the atmosphere in improving speaking by using information gap, to know the students’ result after they improved speaking by using information gap and to know the students’ responses about information gap. the researcher and the collaborator worked together in designing the lesson plan, implementing the action and making reflection. the subject of this research was the students at almuslim university. this study was conducted in three cycles by following the procedures of the action research, namely planning, implementing observing and reflecting. to collect the data, the researcher used some instruments such as observation list, test and questionnaires. the obtained data were presented in two ways, qualitative and quantitative data procedures. qualitative data were presented in words explaining while quantitative data in the process of implementing analysis scoring rubric for speaking assessment. the findings of this research were effective to improve the students’ ability in speaking class, these can be seen from each cycle. the result of the first cycle meeting 1 was from 28 students only 7 students got level 4 (very good), 8 students in level 3 (good), 7 students in level 2+ (fair) and 8 students in level 1+ (poor). it was also seen based on the result of the observation, the raise to be 53,6 %,71,8%, 98,1% for teacher and 43%, 69,2% to 97,1% for students from the first cycle into second and third cycle. the second cycle 8 students were in level 4 (very good), 14 students in level 3 (good), 5 students in level 2+ (fair) and 1 student in level 1+ (poor). the third cycle increased to 22 students in level 4 (very good), 4 students in level 3 (good), 2 students in level 2+ (fair). this means that most of the students got much improvement in their speaking skill. this was proved by the raise of students’ mean score of the test result, 58,8 in the first cycle, 68 in the second cycle and 81,3 in the third cycle. the result of the research also indicated that the students had good responses toward the implementation of the activity. based on the questionnaires given, it was found that mean score for the students perception was 3,616. this means that students responded positively toward the implementation of information gap
