Abstrak

Speaking, involves putting a message together in communicating and interacting with other people, is a complex process. speaking as one of the four language skills is considered difficult by foreign language learners, hence it needs a special attention from foreign language educators. in the teaching-learning process at university level, lecturers have a great role in teaching and motivating students. generally, there are several important aspects required in teaching a lesson including in teaching speaking, namely the lecturers’ preparations, teaching methods and techniques, teaching materials, and assessment. therefore, it is important to investigate the proper implementation of those aspects in the teaching of speaking. this thesis is entitled “a description of the teaching of speaking at the english department of uin ar-raniry.” it is a field research which observed the ways of the teaching of speaking at the english department of uin ar-raniry. this research used a qualitative

roach in presenting the data. it aims at investigating how the english lecturers prepare their speaking lesson, discovering the teaching methods and techniques used, identifying the teaching materials used and finding out how they assess the students’ speaking achievement. the data were collected through observation and interview. the instruments used in collecting the data were observation sheet and interview guide. the data collected were analyzed by means of data reduction, data presentation, verification and conclusion drawing.the result of the research reveals that there are some similarities between the two lecturers in terms of preparing the speaking lesson. at the beginning of the semester, the lecturers collaborated with each other in discussing their preparations relating to the lesson. they also prepared the lesson plans before teaching speaking. the teaching methods and techniques used were various and in accordance with the theories of the teaching of speaking. the teaching materials were taken from authentic materials, pre-designed materials and integrated-international books. in addition, the lecturers conducted informal and formal assessment. besides, they used formative and summative
