buted to all respondents. then through the three steps of analyzing process (data reduction, data display, and interpretation) proposed by miles & huberman, the result shows that aceh jaya english teachers use the eight common methods (grammar translation method, direct method, audio-lingual method, contextual teaching and learning, total physical response, communicative approach, cooperative learning, and scientific approach) in the teaching process even though the implementation frequency of the methods is different from one another. also, the teachers are accustomed to develop teaching materials using authentic sources and they assess their students’ achievement as well although it is unequal for all four skills. to conclude, the teaching process in aceh jaya senior high schools is carried out properly in some aspects yet there are some other aspects that need to be adjusted such as provide equal assessment. consequently, this result is expected to be a valuable input especially for english teachers there to fill the gap to meet the curriculum expectation. abstrak ferra mardani, 2017. the process of teaching and learning english at senior high schools in aceh jaya (a survey at nine sma in calang). thesis. graduate english education program in language education of syiah kuala univervity. (2) t. zulfikar, m. ed. ph.d kata kunci: proses pengajaran, metode pengajaran, pengembangan materi pembelajaran, evaluasi, guru bahasa inggris di aceh jaya penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana guru bahasa inggris mengajar di sma-sma sederajat di aceh jaya, mengetahui apakah mereka melakukan pengembanagan terhadap materi pembelajaran, dan melihat apakah mereka melakukan evaluasi terhadap pencapaian siswa. oleh karena itu, sebuah survey mengenai proses belajar mengajar tersebutdi sma-sma di aceh jaya telah dirampungkan. penelitian ini menggunakan metode survey dan menggunakan angket sebagai instrument penelitian dalam proses pengumpulan data yang dibagikan kepada 14 guru bahasa inggris dari sembilan sma di aceh jaya sebagai responden. melalui tiga tahap analisis data dari miles & huberman, hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa guru bahasa inggris di aceh jaya menggunakan delapan jenis metode umum dalam proses mengajarnya (grammar translation method, direct method, audio-lingual method, contextual teaching and learning, total physical response, communicative approach, cooperative learning, and scientific approach,) meskipun penerapan dari semua metode ini tidak merata. mengenai materi pembelajaran, mereka mengembangkan materi pembelajarannya dengan sumber autentik dan mereka juga melakukan penilaian tehadap pencapaian siswa meskipun penilaian yang dilakukan tersebut tidak seimbang antara keempat skill. kesimpulannya, proses mengajar di sma-sma aceh jaya telah dilakukan dengan sebenarnya dalam beberapa aspek, namun juga masih ada kekurangan. oleh karena itu, hasil ini bisa menjadi masukan khususnya bagi guru-guru bahasa inggris di aceh jaya untuk bisa mengisi kesenjaran atau kekurangan ini guna mencapai target yang telah ditetapkan oleh
