this research tries to identify the factors affecting students’ reticent behaviors and to find out how the teacher encourages the students’ participatory behavior in efl classroom. the research focused on the students’ verbal participation. in collecting data, the writer used observation and interviewguided. based on the result of the research findings, it was identified that the students’ reticence caused by variety of factors including: 1) linguistic factors such as low english proficiency; 2) individual factors, such as unfamiliarity with topic and lack of knowledge in the subject matter; 3) social - psychological factors
