sarjana, jurnal dan tulisan lainnya yang bersifat ilmiah. data yang terkumpul diolah dan dianalisis secara deskriptif kualitatif dan kemudian dikomparasikan. fungsi sidik jari dalam proses penyidikan untuk mengidentifikasi korban dan mengungkap pelaku suatu tindak pidana sangat penting kedudukannya. melalui sidik jari dapat diungkap atau membuktikan korban dan pelaku suatu tindak pidana secara ilmiah. identifikasi sidik jari berfungsi sebagai sarana atau alat bukti pembantu alat bukti lainnya. sedangkan fungsi lain dari identifikasi sidik jari adalah temasuk dalam alat bukti keterangan ahli ___________________ * mahasiswa ** ketua komisi pembimbing *** anggota komisi pembimbing kata kunci: fungsi sidik jari, proses penyidikan, identifikasi korban dan pelaku tindak pidana iv the purposes of fingerprints in the investiga tion process to identify the victims and suspects of a criminal act muhammad rifai * dahlan “ mahfud **' abstract a fingerprint has long been used in a criminal procedure, especially in an investigation process. fingerprints are used to examine further the evidence that might be left behind at the crime scene, which will later be matched with the fingerprint of the suspect and to reveal the identity of the victims or suspects of a criminal act. however, in its implementation, fingerprints may not be functioning properly to uncover the criminal case, and one of the reasons for this is due to the unprofessionalism of the investigators in carrying out their duties this study aims to examine the purposes of fingerprints in the investigation process to identify or reveal the identity of the victims and suspects. it also seeks to highlight the barriers and obstacles that police officers or investigators may experience in applying the fingerprint system in the investigation process. this is normative research using the statute and conceptual approach. the primary data were obtained by reviewing the literature that is relevant to the discussion of this thesis. on the other hand, the secondary data were collected by studying all related material such as the thoughts of academics, scientific works of scholars, journals and other scientific writings. the data were then processed and analyzed qualitatively and later be compared. the purposes of fingerprints in the investigation process is very crucial to identify and reveal the identity of the victims and the suspects. the fingerprints can scientifically reveal or prove the victim and perpetrator of a criminal act. the fingerprint identification can be used as a means of evidence or as means of other supporting evidence. another purpose of the fingerprint identification is that it can be included as expert evidence (the one who provide information from the results of identification). the barriers and obstacles the police officers may experience in implementing the fingerprint system in the investigation process, especially in identifying and revealing the identity of the victims and suspects include the bad weather at the crime scene, the disturbances of wildlife, the microorganism, the human/community, and the carelessness of the police officers in carrying out their investigation duties. it is recommended for the law enforcers to respond to all kinds of developments in the society, for example, they should be aware of the new invention in the forensic science, namely fingerprints as one of the applications of the biotechnology development. keywords: purpose of fingerprints, investigation process, victim and suspect identification mahasiswa komisi pembimbing i komisi pembimbing
