Abstract andrian, 2014. an error analysis of students’ writing (a case study at business college lp3i banda aceh). thesis. graduate program in english language education, syiah kuala university, darussalam, banda aceh. advisors (i) dr. sofyan a. gani, m.a, advisor (ii) t. zulfikar, m.ed., ph.d key words: error analysis and writing. writing in english is not an easy activity to be mastered by students. it takes time and process to develop this skill. there are some errors in grammar that students made in their writing. fotos (1993:79) clearly states that the students’ errors in grammar have something to do with the wrong usage of articles, tense, subject-verb agreement, singular and plural forms of nouns, non-predicate verbs, and so on. in this study students’ errors in grammar divide into five categories, the first is spelling, capitalization, and punctuation mark, the second is an article, possessive adjective and other determiner, the third is tenses, including subject verb

agreement, the fourth is word order (noun and its adjective), word form, and derivative, and the last is clause and phrase (conditional, wish, reported/quoted speech. the objective of this study is to find out the categories of error students made at business college lp3i banda aceh in their writings and to find out the certain errors often made by students in their writings. the subjects of this study were two classes of the fourth semester students of office management and computerized informatic major which consist 17 students. in addition, the data were collected through qualitative and quantitative method. the instruments used to collect the data were; interview guides and test. the finding of the research is the highest errors percentage is at the third category (tenses, including subject verb agreement) and the lowest error percentage is at the fifth category (clause and phrase (conditional, wish, reported/quoted speech). the result from the interview is the teacher did not focus on how to brainstorm ideas before beginning to write. the teacher may do it sometimes due to his response to the researcher's question, but the result is that most of the students felt hard to do it. lack of vocabulary maybe not the new problem for second language learner, but it is obviously the problem for the students of lp3i in writing a composition. the teacher had better provide them correct vocabulary choices and to prepare students reach some fluency, before beginning to write free writing, the teacher should train students with grammar rules needed for beginners such as simple tenses, determiners usage and the
